BONITA SPRINGS — The executive director of Gulf Coast Humane Society was cited with animal cruelty Thursday after pictures of an ill dog given to Lee County Animal Services prompted the agency to investigate its treatment.

Don Cohen faces a mandatory court appearance and up to a $500 fine, said Ria Brown, spokeswoman for Lee County Animal Services, which issued the citation.

Animal Services was notified of the poor condition of the approximately 8-month-old mixed-breed dog on Wednesday when an anonymous person hand-delivered a photo and another person e-mailed the photo, Brown said.

The photo, given to Animal Services and distributed to the media this week, shows the puppy had open, bloody sores over much of her body.

The east Fort Myers humane society has come under fire recently by former employees and former board members who have claimed there were filthy conditions, financial irregularities and other inappropriate and improper behavior at the society.

Mark Scarola, president of the humane society’s board, said Thursday that Cohen remains employed.

“He’s not been suspended,” Scarola said. “Nothing’s been changed.
